We already have the recently released 12 mp full-frame CMOS Nikon D3 which is suited to the sports shooter with its ability to shoot 9 frames per second (fps) @ 12 mp, 11 fps @ 5 mp.
A D3x version designed for studio work would fill the hole for a Nikon model to compete with the 21 mp Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III.
BTW, Stephen Shankland has a helpful primer on CMOS sensors in his post New CMOS sensors catching on in cameras.
Lucky Scoble who is using a Nikon D3 for a month while he enjoys his time in Davos. He's posting on his Flickr account. He has some really nice available light shots since this camera is able to perform quite well at ISOs as high as 25,600.

This shot of Tim O'Reilly was shot at ISO 6400, f/5 @ 1/100 sec.
The camera I'd like to see finally released. The Sigma DP1 is a compact digicam with the 14 megapixel FOVEON X3, APS-C sized image sensor:

Here's a rundown of an early iteration of this model from DPReview.com. The current Sigma Web site for the DP1 has some really annoying Flash animation going on.
